David G. McDonald: President and COO of OSI Group LLC, Leader and Role Model

In 1909, Otto and Sons started out as a small meat market in Illinois, today it is one of the largest meat and frozen food distributors in the world and one of the largest private companies as well. The success of OSI Group can be credited to David G. McDonald and Sheldon Lavin. David is the President and COO of OSI Group. David believes that in order to satisfy clients and the end users of OSI products the company must think global, but act local much like its major partner, McDonalds operates.

David McDonald has been a part of OSI Group for more than 30 years. He and Sheldon Lavin the present chairman and CEO of OSI Group LLC have been with the company almost as long as the founder, Otto Kolshowsky’s sons have. With Sheldon at the helm and David by his side the pair have managed to establish OSI’s global empire. With over 60 operational facilities, 200,000 employees in 17 nations OSI Group is quickly climbing the ranks as one of the largest privately owned companies on earth with it achieving the number 58 spot in 2016. David McDonald earned his bachelors degree in animal science from Iowa State University in 1987. He joined OSI Group and quickly climbed the ranks to President and COO. He believes that a global company cannot operate on a one-size-fits-all strategy that is why OSI has continuously adapted to its environment. In 2016, OSI Group LLC acquired several large meat and convenience food suppliers in Europe for example, it acquired Baho foods, which is a Dutch convenience food manufacturer that has five subsidiaries and operates in 18 European countries. With this acquisition David Mcdonald’s philosophy has remained intact to keep things local. One of the most important things for aspiring entrepreneurs to understand is that business is competition. Any industry that people are going to get into is going to be competitive. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the competition. Even people who just want to make their own share of profits are going to have to compete for the space to do so. Kate Hudson has made Fabletics into a competitive brand. Among the companies it is competing with is Amazon. One of the reasons that it is going straight to Amazon for the fashion industry is because it has beat out all of the other companies in one way or another.


One of the best ways to compete with Amazon is by studying the company. The founders of Fabletics have looked into what Amazon is doing in the fashion industry. They have paid a lot of attention to the details and took plenty of notes. They have gone through what could work for them and what might work against them. After they have looked at what Amazon does and what they can take with them, they have looked at some of the things that Amazon does not do.


For one thing, Kate Hudson has decided to do something that none of the larger companies are known for doing. She has decided to make Fabletics more accessible to the customer. Among the ways they have done this is by handling their own advertising campaign. She has also engaged customers in deeper ways and met them at their level. Betsy Devos – on topic article

Betsy DeVos is known in her hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan as a reformer and loyal defender of charter schools. Residents there have had some difficulty seeing the Betsy DeVos as she has been portrayed since becoming President Trump’s education secretary. DeVos has spent some 30 years pursuing reform in various avenues, attempting to find solutions to different social issues. Along with her positions in business and politics, DeVos has also looked for ways to reform through non-profit positions.

In a recent interview, DeVos talked more about educational reform. She reflected on the nearly 25 years since the first private school voucher program was started in Wisconsin. DeVos noted that there are well over 200,000 students in school choice programs throughout the country. In the previous year, the programs added another 40,000 students. After polling five states, DeVos and her people found that school choice programs were extremely popular, and especially in the Latino community.

DeVos believes that these numbers and events are forcing people to pay attention to the fact that the traditional format of public schooling is failing in a lot of cases. She stated that her experience with a small Christian school in Grand Rapids led her to become more involved in the school choice movement. She started a scholarship fund with her husband, but soon realized that it wouldn’t be enough to give parents broad choices on where to send their kids for school.

DeVos then realized that educational choice was the solution and she worked to expand the movement with voucher programs and tax credits. When an amendment to the Michigan constitution failed, she began a political action committee in the state. As her work became more successful in the early 2000s, she decided that it needed to be brought to attention nationally.

Though DeVos identifies as a Republican, she believes that educational choice can only truly succeed if it is made a non-partisan or bipartisan issue. Unfortunately, this has been difficult to implement since Democrats traditionally enjoy a lot of support from teachers’ unions. DeVos believes that education should not be a partisan issue and wants to make it safer for Democrats to support this politically. Despite what it looks like on the surface, DeVos says she also believes that many Democrats also support educational choice.
