Blossoming from a one-room operation into a 250 million dollar hedge fund, that emerged onto the official world-business stage in July of 2009, the company that began when Sahm Adangi took down some Chinese companies, has since delivered net returns of over one thousand and one hundred percent, more than five times higher than similar returns generated by S&P 500. The one big problem though, he says, is that using EPS for employees can result in the executives of the company, particularly the chief executive officer, having far too much power in deciding what metrics the company will use to determine EPS. This can skew things if they try to use EPS to drive share sells. This is something that Jeremy Goldstein calls misleading if not outright illegal but some executives will still try it.

The answer, he says, is that a system must be put in place at companies that will hold executives responsible for what they do in regards to EPS. This will both shareholders and employees and result in long-term growth that is stable in nature. It will also result in share growth that can be both reasonably measured as well as repeatable.

In a recent interview, DeVos talked more about educational reform. She reflected on the nearly 25 years since the first private school voucher program was started in Wisconsin. DeVos noted that there are well over 200,000 students in school choice programs throughout the country. In the previous year, the programs added another 40,000 students. After polling five states, DeVos and her people found that school choice programs were extremely popular, and especially in the Latino community.

DeVos believes that these numbers and events are forcing people to pay attention to the fact that the traditional format of public schooling is failing in a lot of cases. She stated that her experience with a small Christian school in Grand Rapids led her to become more involved in the school choice movement. She started a scholarship fund with her husband, but soon realized that it wouldn’t be enough to give parents broad choices on where to send their kids for school.

DeVos then realized that educational choice was the solution and she worked to expand the movement with voucher programs and tax credits. When an amendment to the Michigan constitution failed, she began a political action committee in the state. As her work became more successful in the early 2000s, she decided that it needed to be brought to attention nationally.

Though DeVos identifies as a Republican, she believes that educational choice can only truly succeed if it is made a non-partisan or bipartisan issue. Unfortunately, this has been difficult to implement since Democrats traditionally enjoy a lot of support from teachers’ unions. DeVos believes that education should not be a partisan issue and wants to make it safer for Democrats to support this politically. Despite what it looks like on the surface, DeVos says she also believes that many Democrats also support educational choice.

Betsy DeVos has been a reformer nearly all her life. While she was at Calvin College, she got actively involved in politics and has remained committed to politics ever since. Over thirty years since she left the institution, Ms. DeVis has been involved in various party organizations, campaigns and action committees. For over six years, she was the chair of the Michigan Republican Party.



She says that her entrance into philanthropy was not a one-time event, but rather the culmination of a gradual process which started on her first visit to Potter House School in Grand Rapids. She and her husband were inspired by the serene environment created at the school which was brilliant for learning and safe for all. This convinced her that she had to be involved in the creation of such an environment. She believes strongly that such an environment can only be created through rigorous education reform.
